Nahum 1
- 1<pb/>A prophecy concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
- 2<pb/><t>The LORD is a jealous and avenging God;</t> <t>the LORD takes vengeance and is filled with wrath.</t> <t>The LORD takes vengeance on his foes</t> <t>and vents his wrath against his enemies.</t>
- 3<t>The LORD is slow to anger but great in power;</t> <t>the LORD will not leave the guilty unpunished.</t> <t>His way is in the whirlwind and the storm,</t> <t>and clouds are the dust of his feet.</t>
- 4<t>He rebukes the sea and dries it up;</t> <t>he makes all the rivers run dry.</t> <t>Bashan and Carmel wither</t> <t>and the blossoms of Lebanon fade.</t>
- 5<t>The mountains quake before him</t> <t>and the hills melt away.</t> <t>The earth trembles at his presence,</t> <t>the world and all who live in it.</t>
- 6<t>Who can withstand his indignation?</t> <t>Who can endure his fierce anger?</t> <t>His wrath is poured out like fire;</t> <t>the rocks are shattered before him. <pb/></t>
- 7<t>The LORD is good,</t> <t>a refuge in times of trouble.</t> <t>He cares for those who trust in him,</t>
- 8<t>but with an overwhelming flood</t> <t>he will make an end of Nineveh;</t> <t>he will pursue his foes into the realm of darkness. <pb/></t>
- 9<t>Whatever they plot against the LORD</t> <t>he will bring<f>[1]</f> to an end;</t> <t>trouble will not come a second time.</t>
- 10<t>They will be entangled among thorns</t> <t>and drunk from their wine;</t> <t>they will be consumed like dry stubble.<f>[2]</f></t>
- 11<t>From you, Nineveh, has one come forth</t> <t>who plots evil against the LORD</t> <t>and devises wicked plans.</t>
- 12<pb/>This is what the LORD says: <pb/><t>“Although they have allies and are numerous,</t> <t>they will be destroyed and pass away.</t> <t>Although I have afflicted you, Judah,</t> <t>I will afflict you no more.</t>
- 13<t>Now I will break their yoke from your neck</t> <t>and tear your shackles away.” <pb/></t>
- 14<t>The LORD has given a command concerning you, Nineveh:</t> <t>“You will have no descendants to bear your name.</t> <t>I will destroy the images and idols</t> <t>that are in the temple of your gods.</t> <t>I will prepare your grave,</t> <t>for you are vile.” <pb/></t>
- 15<t>Look, there on the mountains,</t> <t>the feet of one who brings good news,</t> <t>who proclaims peace!</t> <t>Celebrate your festivals, Judah,</t> <t>and fulfill your vows.</t> <t>No more will the wicked invade you;</t> <t>they will be completely destroyed.<f>[3]</f></t>
