Matthew 1
- 1<pb/>This is the genealogy<f>[1]</f> of Jesus the Messiah<f>[2]</f> the son of David, the son of Abraham:
- 2<pb/><t>Abraham was the father of Isaac, <pb/>Isaac the father of Jacob, <pb/>Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, <pb/></t>
- 3<t>Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, <pb/>Perez the father of Hezron, <pb/>Hezron the father of Ram, <pb/></t>
- 4<t>Ram the father of Amminadab, <pb/>Amminadab the father of Nahshon, <pb/>Nahshon the father of Salmon, <pb/></t>
- 5<t>Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, <pb/>Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, <pb/>Obed the father of Jesse, <pb/></t>
- 6<t>and Jesse the father of King David. <pb/>David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife, <pb/></t>
- 7<t>Solomon the father of Rehoboam, <pb/>Rehoboam the father of Abijah, <pb/>Abijah the father of Asa, <pb/></t>
- 8<t>Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, <pb/>Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram, <pb/>Jehoram the father of Uzziah, <pb/></t>
- 9<t>Uzziah the father of Jotham, <pb/>Jotham the father of Ahaz, <pb/>Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, <pb/></t>
- 10<t>Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, <pb/>Manasseh the father of Amon, <pb/>Amon the father of Josiah, <pb/></t>
- 11<t>and Josiah the father of Jeconiah<f>[3]</f> and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon. <pb/></t>
- 12<t>After the exile to Babylon: <pb/>Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, <pb/>Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, <pb/></t>
- 13<t>Zerubbabel the father of Abihud, <pb/>Abihud the father of Eliakim, <pb/>Eliakim the father of Azor, <pb/></t>
- 14<t>Azor the father of Zadok, <pb/>Zadok the father of Akim, <pb/>Akim the father of Elihud, <pb/></t>
- 15<t>Elihud the father of Eleazar, <pb/>Eleazar the father of Matthan, <pb/>Matthan the father of Jacob, <pb/></t>
- 16<t>and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.</t>
- 17<pb/>Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.
- 18<pb/>This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about<f>[4]</f>: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.
- 19Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet<f>[5]</f> did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
- 20<pb/>But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
- 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,<f>[6]</f> because he will save his people from their sins.”
- 22<pb/>All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
- 23“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”<f>[7]</f> (which means “God with us”).
- 24<pb/>When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.
- 25But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
