Lamentations 5
- 1<pb/><t>Remember, LORD, what has happened to us;</t> <t>look, and see our disgrace.</t>
- 2<t>Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers,</t> <t>our homes to foreigners.</t>
- 3<t>We have become fatherless,</t> <t>our mothers are widows.</t>
- 4<t>We must buy the water we drink;</t> <t>our wood can be had only at a price.</t>
- 5<t>Those who pursue us are at our heels;</t> <t>we are weary and find no rest.</t>
- 6<t>We submitted to Egypt and Assyria</t> <t>to get enough bread.</t>
- 7<t>Our ancestors sinned and are no more,</t> <t>and we bear their punishment.</t>
- 8<t>Slaves rule over us,</t> <t>and there is no one to free us from their hands.</t>
- 9<t>We get our bread at the risk of our lives</t> <t>because of the sword in the desert.</t>
- 10<t>Our skin is hot as an oven,</t> <t>feverish from hunger.</t>
- 11<t>Women have been violated in Zion,</t> <t>and virgins in the towns of Judah.</t>
- 12<t>Princes have been hung up by their hands;</t> <t>elders are shown no respect.</t>
- 13<t>Young men toil at the millstones;</t> <t>boys stagger under loads of wood.</t>
- 14<t>The elders are gone from the city gate;</t> <t>the young men have stopped their music.</t>
- 15<t>Joy is gone from our hearts;</t> <t>our dancing has turned to mourning.</t>
- 16<t>The crown has fallen from our head.</t> <t>Woe to us, for we have sinned!</t>
- 17<t>Because of this our hearts are faint,</t> <t>because of these things our eyes grow dim</t>
- 18<t>for Mount Zion, which lies desolate,</t> <t>with jackals prowling over it. <pb/></t>
- 19<t>You, LORD, reign forever;</t> <t>your throne endures from generation to generation.</t>
- 20<t>Why do you always forget us?</t> <t>Why do you forsake us so long?</t>
- 21<t>Restore us to yourself, LORD, that we may return;</t> <t>renew our days as of old</t>
- 22<t>unless you have utterly rejected us</t> <t>and are angry with us beyond measure.</t>
