Jonah 2

  1. 1<pb/><f>[1]</f>From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God.
  2. 2He said: <pb/><t>“In my distress I called to the LORD,</t> <t>and he answered me.</t> <t>From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help,</t> <t>and you listened to my cry.</t>
  3. 3<t>You hurled me into the depths,</t> <t>into the very heart of the seas,</t> <t>and the currents swirled about me;</t> <t>all your waves and breakers</t> <t>swept over me.</t>
  4. 4<t>I said, ‘I have been banished</t> <t>from your sight;</t> <t>yet I will look again</t> <t>toward your holy temple.’</t>
  5. 5<t>The engulfing waters threatened me,<f>[2]</f></t> <t>the deep surrounded me;</t> <t>seaweed was wrapped around my head.</t>
  6. 6<t>To the roots of the mountains I sank down;</t> <t>the earth beneath barred me in forever.</t> <t>But you, LORD my God,</t> <t>brought my life up from the pit. <pb/></t>
  7. 7<t>“When my life was ebbing away,</t> <t>I remembered you, LORD,</t> <t>and my prayer rose to you,</t> <t>to your holy temple. <pb/></t>
  8. 8<t>“Those who cling to worthless idols</t> <t>turn away from God’s love for them.</t>
  9. 9<t>But I, with shouts of grateful praise,</t> <t>will sacrifice to you.</t> <t>What I have vowed I will make good.</t> <t>I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the LORD.’ ”</t>
  10. 10<pb/>And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
