Job 7
- 1<pb/><t>“Do not mortals have hard service on earth?</t> <t>Are not their days like those of hired laborers?</t>
- 2<t>Like a slave longing for the evening shadows,</t> <t>or a hired laborer waiting to be paid,</t>
- 3<t>so I have been allotted months of futility,</t> <t>and nights of misery have been assigned to me.</t>
- 4<t>When I lie down I think, ‘How long before I get up?’</t> <t>The night drags on, and I toss and turn until dawn.</t>
- 5<t>My body is clothed with worms and scabs,</t> <t>my skin is broken and festering. <pb/></t>
- 6<t>“My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle,</t> <t>and they come to an end without hope.</t>
- 7<t>Remember, O God, that my life is but a breath;</t> <t>my eyes will never see happiness again.</t>
- 8<t>The eye that now sees me will see me no longer;</t> <t>you will look for me, but I will be no more.</t>
- 9<t>As a cloud vanishes and is gone,</t> <t>so one who goes down to the grave does not return.</t>
- 10<t>He will never come to his house again;</t> <t>his place will know him no more. <pb/></t>
- 11<t>“Therefore I will not keep silent;</t> <t>I will speak out in the anguish of my spirit,</t> <t>I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.</t>
- 12<t>Am I the sea, or the monster of the deep,</t> <t>that you put me under guard?</t>
- 13<t>When I think my bed will comfort me</t> <t>and my couch will ease my complaint,</t>
- 14<t>even then you frighten me with dreams</t> <t>and terrify me with visions,</t>
- 15<t>so that I prefer strangling and death,</t> <t>rather than this body of mine.</t>
- 16<t>I despise my life; I would not live forever.</t> <t>Let me alone; my days have no meaning. <pb/></t>
- 17<t>“What is mankind that you make so much of them,</t> <t>that you give them so much attention,</t>
- 18<t>that you examine them every morning</t> <t>and test them every moment?</t>
- 19<t>Will you never look away from me,</t> <t>or let me alone even for an instant?</t>
- 20<t>If I have sinned, what have I done to you,</t> <t>you who see everything we do?</t> <t>Why have you made me your target?</t> <t>Have I become a burden to you?<f>[10]</f></t>
- 21<t>Why do you not pardon my offenses</t> <t>and forgive my sins?</t> <t>For I will soon lie down in the dust;</t> <t>you will search for me, but I will be no more.”</t>
