Job 5

  1. 1<pb/><t>“Call if you will, but who will answer you?</t> <t>To which of the holy ones will you turn?</t>
  2. 2<t>Resentment kills a fool,</t> <t>and envy slays the simple.</t>
  3. 3<t>I myself have seen a fool taking root,</t> <t>but suddenly his house was cursed.</t>
  4. 4<t>His children are far from safety,</t> <t>crushed in court without a defender.</t>
  5. 5<t>The hungry consume his harvest,</t> <t>taking it even from among thorns,</t> <t>and the thirsty pant after his wealth.</t>
  6. 6<t>For hardship does not spring from the soil,</t> <t>nor does trouble sprout from the ground.</t>
  7. 7<t>Yet man is born to trouble</t> <t>as surely as sparks fly upward. <pb/></t>
  8. 8<t>“But if I were you, I would appeal to God;</t> <t>I would lay my cause before him.</t>
  9. 9<t>He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed,</t> <t>miracles that cannot be counted.</t>
  10. 10<t>He provides rain for the earth;</t> <t>he sends water on the countryside.</t>
  11. 11<t>The lowly he sets on high,</t> <t>and those who mourn are lifted to safety.</t>
  12. 12<t>He thwarts the plans of the crafty,</t> <t>so that their hands achieve no success.</t>
  13. 13<t>He catches the wise in their craftiness,</t> <t>and the schemes of the wily are swept away.</t>
  14. 14<t>Darkness comes upon them in the daytime;</t> <t>at noon they grope as in the night.</t>
  15. 15<t>He saves the needy from the sword in their mouth;</t> <t>he saves them from the clutches of the powerful.</t>
  16. 16<t>So the poor have hope,</t> <t>and injustice shuts its mouth. <pb/></t>
  17. 17<t>“Blessed is the one whom God corrects;</t> <t>so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.<f>[7]</f></t>
  18. 18<t>For he wounds, but he also binds up;</t> <t>he injures, but his hands also heal.</t>
  19. 19<t>From six calamities he will rescue you;</t> <t>in seven no harm will touch you.</t>
  20. 20<t>In famine he will deliver you from death,</t> <t>and in battle from the stroke of the sword.</t>
  21. 21<t>You will be protected from the lash of the tongue,</t> <t>and need not fear when destruction comes.</t>
  22. 22<t>You will laugh at destruction and famine,</t> <t>and need not fear the wild animals.</t>
  23. 23<t>For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field,</t> <t>and the wild animals will be at peace with you.</t>
  24. 24<t>You will know that your tent is secure;</t> <t>you will take stock of your property and find nothing missing.</t>
  25. 25<t>You will know that your children will be many,</t> <t>and your descendants like the grass of the earth.</t>
  26. 26<t>You will come to the grave in full vigor,</t> <t>like sheaves gathered in season. <pb/></t>
  27. 27<t>“We have examined this, and it is true.</t> <t>So hear it and apply it to yourself.”</t>
