Job 37
- 1<pb/><t>“At this my heart pounds</t> <t>and leaps from its place.</t>
- 2<t>Listen! Listen to the roar of his voice,</t> <t>to the rumbling that comes from his mouth.</t>
- 3<t>He unleashes his lightning beneath the whole heaven</t> <t>and sends it to the ends of the earth.</t>
- 4<t>After that comes the sound of his roar;</t> <t>he thunders with his majestic voice.</t> <t>When his voice resounds,</t> <t>he holds nothing back.</t>
- 5<t>God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways;</t> <t>he does great things beyond our understanding.</t>
- 6<t>He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’</t> <t>and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’</t>
- 7<t>So that everyone he has made may know his work,</t> <t>he stops all people from their labor.<f>[67]</f></t>
- 8<t>The animals take cover;</t> <t>they remain in their dens.</t>
- 9<t>The tempest comes out from its chamber,</t> <t>the cold from the driving winds.</t>
- 10<t>The breath of God produces ice,</t> <t>and the broad waters become frozen.</t>
- 11<t>He loads the clouds with moisture;</t> <t>he scatters his lightning through them.</t>
- 12<t>At his direction they swirl around</t> <t>over the face of the whole earth</t> <t>to do whatever he commands them.</t>
- 13<t>He brings the clouds to punish people,</t> <t>or to water his earth and show his love. <pb/></t>
- 14<t>“Listen to this, Job;</t> <t>stop and consider God’s wonders.</t>
- 15<t>Do you know how God controls the clouds</t> <t>and makes his lightning flash?</t>
- 16<t>Do you know how the clouds hang poised,</t> <t>those wonders of him who has perfect knowledge?</t>
- 17<t>You who swelter in your clothes</t> <t>when the land lies hushed under the south wind,</t>
- 18<t>can you join him in spreading out the skies,</t> <t>hard as a mirror of cast bronze? <pb/></t>
- 19<t>“Tell us what we should say to him;</t> <t>we cannot draw up our case because of our darkness.</t>
- 20<t>Should he be told that I want to speak?</t> <t>Would anyone ask to be swallowed up?</t>
- 21<t>Now no one can look at the sun,</t> <t>bright as it is in the skies</t> <t>after the wind has swept them clean.</t>
- 22<t>Out of the north he comes in golden splendor;</t> <t>God comes in awesome majesty.</t>
- 23<t>The Almighty is beyond our reach and exalted in power;</t> <t>in his justice and great righteousness, he does not oppress.</t>
- 24<t>Therefore, people revere him,</t> <t>for does he not have regard for all the wise in heart?<f>[68]</f>”</t>
