Job 32
- 1<pb/>So these three men stopped answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.
- 2But Elihu son of Barakel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, became very angry with Job for justifying himself rather than God.
- 3He was also angry with the three friends, because they had found no way to refute Job, and yet had condemned him.<f>[51]</f>
- 4Now Elihu had waited before speaking to Job because they were older than he.
- 5But when he saw that the three men had nothing more to say, his anger was aroused.
- 6<pb/>So Elihu son of Barakel the Buzite said: <pb/><t>“I am young in years,</t> <t>and you are old;</t> <t>that is why I was fearful,</t> <t>not daring to tell you what I know.</t>
- 7<t>I thought, ‘Age should speak;</t> <t>advanced years should teach wisdom.’</t>
- 8<t>But it is the spirit<f>[52]</f> in a person,</t> <t>the breath of the Almighty, that gives them understanding.</t>
- 9<t>It is not only the old<f>[53]</f> who are wise,</t> <t>not only the aged who understand what is right. <pb/></t>
- 10<t>“Therefore I say: Listen to me;</t> <t>I too will tell you what I know.</t>
- 11<t>I waited while you spoke,</t> <t>I listened to your reasoning;</t> <t>while you were searching for words,</t>
- 12<t>I gave you my full attention.</t> <t>But not one of you has proved Job wrong;</t> <t>none of you has answered his arguments.</t>
- 13<t>Do not say, ‘We have found wisdom;</t> <t>let God, not a man, refute him.’</t>
- 14<t>But Job has not marshaled his words against me,</t> <t>and I will not answer him with your arguments. <pb/></t>
- 15<t>“They are dismayed and have no more to say;</t> <t>words have failed them.</t>
- 16<t>Must I wait, now that they are silent,</t> <t>now that they stand there with no reply?</t>
- 17<t>I too will have my say;</t> <t>I too will tell what I know.</t>
- 18<t>For I am full of words,</t> <t>and the spirit within me compels me;</t>
- 19<t>inside I am like bottled-up wine,</t> <t>like new wineskins ready to burst.</t>
- 20<t>I must speak and find relief;</t> <t>I must open my lips and reply.</t>
- 21<t>I will show no partiality,</t> <t>nor will I flatter anyone;</t>
- 22<t>for if I were skilled in flattery,</t> <t>my Maker would soon take me away.</t>
