Job 13
- 1<pb/><t>“My eyes have seen all this,</t> <t>my ears have heard and understood it.</t>
- 2<t>What you know, I also know;</t> <t>I am not inferior to you.</t>
- 3<t>But I desire to speak to the Almighty</t> <t>and to argue my case with God.</t>
- 4<t>You, however, smear me with lies;</t> <t>you are worthless physicians, all of you!</t>
- 5<t>If only you would be altogether silent!</t> <t>For you, that would be wisdom.</t>
- 6<t>Hear now my argument;</t> <t>listen to the pleas of my lips.</t>
- 7<t>Will you speak wickedly on God’s behalf?</t> <t>Will you speak deceitfully for him?</t>
- 8<t>Will you show him partiality?</t> <t>Will you argue the case for God?</t>
- 9<t>Would it turn out well if he examined you?</t> <t>Could you deceive him as you might deceive a mortal?</t>
- 10<t>He would surely call you to account</t> <t>if you secretly showed partiality.</t>
- 11<t>Would not his splendor terrify you?</t> <t>Would not the dread of him fall on you?</t>
- 12<t>Your maxims are proverbs of ashes;</t> <t>your defenses are defenses of clay. <pb/></t>
- 13<t>“Keep silent and let me speak;</t> <t>then let come to me what may.</t>
- 14<t>Why do I put myself in jeopardy</t> <t>and take my life in my hands?</t>
- 15<t>Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him;</t> <t>I will surely<f>[19]</f> defend my ways to his face.</t>
- 16<t>Indeed, this will turn out for my deliverance,</t> <t>for no godless person would dare come before him!</t>
- 17<t>Listen carefully to what I say;</t> <t>let my words ring in your ears.</t>
- 18<t>Now that I have prepared my case,</t> <t>I know I will be vindicated.</t>
- 19<t>Can anyone bring charges against me?</t> <t>If so, I will be silent and die. <pb/></t>
- 20<t>“Only grant me these two things, God,</t> <t>and then I will not hide from you:</t>
- 21<t>Withdraw your hand far from me,</t> <t>and stop frightening me with your terrors.</t>
- 22<t>Then summon me and I will answer,</t> <t>or let me speak, and you reply to me.</t>
- 23<t>How many wrongs and sins have I committed?</t> <t>Show me my offense and my sin.</t>
- 24<t>Why do you hide your face</t> <t>and consider me your enemy?</t>
- 25<t>Will you torment a windblown leaf?</t> <t>Will you chase after dry chaff?</t>
- 26<t>For you write down bitter things against me</t> <t>and make me reap the sins of my youth.</t>
- 27<t>You fasten my feet in shackles;</t> <t>you keep close watch on all my paths</t> <t>by putting marks on the soles of my feet. <pb/></t>
- 28<t>“So man wastes away like something rotten,</t> <t>like a garment eaten by moths.</t>
