Job 10
- 1<pb/><t>“I loathe my very life;</t> <t>therefore I will give free rein to my complaint</t> <t>and speak out in the bitterness of my soul.</t>
- 2<t>I say to God: Do not declare me guilty,</t> <t>but tell me what charges you have against me.</t>
- 3<t>Does it please you to oppress me,</t> <t>to spurn the work of your hands,</t> <t>while you smile on the plans of the wicked?</t>
- 4<t>Do you have eyes of flesh?</t> <t>Do you see as a mortal sees?</t>
- 5<t>Are your days like those of a mortal</t> <t>or your years like those of a strong man,</t>
- 6<t>that you must search out my faults</t> <t>and probe after my sin—</t>
- 7<t>though you know that I am not guilty</t> <t>and that no one can rescue me from your hand? <pb/></t>
- 8<t>“Your hands shaped me and made me.</t> <t>Will you now turn and destroy me?</t>
- 9<t>Remember that you molded me like clay.</t> <t>Will you now turn me to dust again?</t>
- 10<t>Did you not pour me out like milk</t> <t>and curdle me like cheese,</t>
- 11<t>clothe me with skin and flesh</t> <t>and knit me together with bones and sinews?</t>
- 12<t>You gave me life and showed me kindness,</t> <t>and in your providence watched over my spirit. <pb/></t>
- 13<t>“But this is what you concealed in your heart,</t> <t>and I know that this was in your mind:</t>
- 14<t>If I sinned, you would be watching me</t> <t>and would not let my offense go unpunished.</t>
- 15<t>If I am guilty—woe to me!</t> <t>Even if I am innocent, I cannot lift my head,</t> <t>for I am full of shame</t> <t>and drowned in<f>[15]</f> my affliction.</t>
- 16<t>If I hold my head high, you stalk me like a lion</t> <t>and again display your awesome power against me.</t>
- 17<t>You bring new witnesses against me</t> <t>and increase your anger toward me;</t> <t>your forces come against me wave upon wave. <pb/></t>
- 18<t>“Why then did you bring me out of the womb?</t> <t>I wish I had died before any eye saw me.</t>
- 19<t>If only I had never come into being,</t> <t>or had been carried straight from the womb to the grave!</t>
- 20<t>Are not my few days almost over?</t> <t>Turn away from me so I can have a moment’s joy</t>
- 21<t>before I go to the place of no return,</t> <t>to the land of gloom and utter darkness,</t>
- 22<t>to the land of deepest night,</t> <t>of utter darkness and disorder,</t> <t>where even the light is like darkness.”</t>
