Jeremiah 30

  1. 1<pb/>This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
  2. 2“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Write in a book all the words I have spoken to you.
  3. 3The days are coming,’ declares the LORD, ‘when I will bring my people Israel and Judah back from captivity<f>[55]</f> and restore them to the land I gave their ancestors to possess,’ says the LORD.”
  4. 4<pb/>These are the words the LORD spoke concerning Israel and Judah:
  5. 5“This is what the LORD says: <pb/><t>“ ‘Cries of fear are heard—</t> <t>terror, not peace.</t>
  6. 6<t>Ask and see:</t> <t>Can a man bear children?</t> <t>Then why do I see every strong man</t> <t>with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor,</t> <t>every face turned deathly pale?</t>
  7. 7<t>How awful that day will be!</t> <t>No other will be like it.</t> <t>It will be a time of trouble for Jacob,</t> <t>but he will be saved out of it. <pb/></t>
  8. 8<t>“ ‘In that day,’ declares the LORD Almighty,</t> <t>‘I will break the yoke off their necks</t> <t>and will tear off their bonds;</t> <t>no longer will foreigners enslave them.</t>
  9. 9<t>Instead, they will serve the LORD their God</t> <t>and David their king,</t> <t>whom I will raise up for them. <pb/></t>
  10. 10<t>“ ‘So do not be afraid, Jacob my servant;</t> <t>do not be dismayed, Israel,’</t> <t>declares the LORD.</t> <t>‘I will surely save you out of a distant place,</t> <t>your descendants from the land of their exile.</t> <t>Jacob will again have peace and security,</t> <t>and no one will make him afraid.</t>
  11. 11<t>I am with you and will save you,’</t> <t>declares the LORD.</t> <t>‘Though I completely destroy all the nations</t> <t>among which I scatter you,</t> <t>I will not completely destroy you.</t> <t>I will discipline you but only in due measure;</t> <t>I will not let you go entirely unpunished.’</t>
  12. 12<pb/>“This is what the LORD says: <pb/><t>“ ‘Your wound is incurable,</t> <t>your injury beyond healing.</t>
  13. 13<t>There is no one to plead your cause,</t> <t>no remedy for your sore,</t> <t>no healing for you.</t>
  14. 14<t>All your allies have forgotten you;</t> <t>they care nothing for you.</t> <t>I have struck you as an enemy would</t> <t>and punished you as would the cruel,</t> <t>because your guilt is so great</t> <t>and your sins so many.</t>
  15. 15<t>Why do you cry out over your wound,</t> <t>your pain that has no cure?</t> <t>Because of your great guilt and many sins</t> <t>I have done these things to you. <pb/></t>
  16. 16<t>“ ‘But all who devour you will be devoured;</t> <t>all your enemies will go into exile.</t> <t>Those who plunder you will be plundered;</t> <t>all who make spoil of you I will despoil.</t>
  17. 17<t>But I will restore you to health</t> <t>and heal your wounds,’</t> <t>declares the LORD,</t> <t>‘because you are called an outcast,</t> <t>Zion for whom no one cares.’</t>
  18. 18<pb/>“This is what the LORD says: <pb/><t>“ ‘I will restore the fortunes of Jacob’s tents</t> <t>and have compassion on his dwellings;</t> <t>the city will be rebuilt on her ruins,</t> <t>and the palace will stand in its proper place.</t>
  19. 19<t>From them will come songs of thanksgiving</t> <t>and the sound of rejoicing.</t> <t>I will add to their numbers,</t> <t>and they will not be decreased;</t> <t>I will bring them honor,</t> <t>and they will not be disdained.</t>
  20. 20<t>Their children will be as in days of old,</t> <t>and their community will be established before me;</t> <t>I will punish all who oppress them.</t>
  21. 21<t>Their leader will be one of their own;</t> <t>their ruler will arise from among them.</t> <t>I will bring him near and he will come close to me—</t> <t>for who is he who will devote himself</t> <t>to be close to me?’</t> <t>declares the LORD.</t>
  22. 22<t>“ ‘So you will be my people,</t> <t>and I will be your God.’ ” <pb/></t>
  23. 23<t>See, the storm of the LORD</t> <t>will burst out in wrath,</t> <t>a driving wind swirling down</t> <t>on the heads of the wicked.</t>
  24. 24<t>The fierce anger of the LORD will not turn back</t> <t>until he fully accomplishes</t> <t>the purposes of his heart.</t> <t>In days to come</t> <t>you will understand this.</t>
