Jeremiah 10
- 1<pb/>Hear what the LORD says to you, people of Israel.
- 2This is what the LORD says: <pb/><t>“Do not learn the ways of the nations</t> <t>or be terrified by signs in the heavens,</t> <t>though the nations are terrified by them.</t>
- 3<t>For the practices of the peoples are worthless;</t> <t>they cut a tree out of the forest,</t> <t>and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel.</t>
- 4<t>They adorn it with silver and gold;</t> <t>they fasten it with hammer and nails</t> <t>so it will not totter.</t>
- 5<t>Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field,</t> <t>their idols cannot speak;</t> <t>they must be carried</t> <t>because they cannot walk.</t> <t>Do not fear them;</t> <t>they can do no harm</t> <t>nor can they do any good.” <pb/></t>
- 6<t>No one is like you, LORD;</t> <t>you are great,</t> <t>and your name is mighty in power.</t>
- 7<t>Who should not fear you,</t> <t>King of the nations?</t> <t>This is your due.</t> <t>Among all the wise leaders of the nations</t> <t>and in all their kingdoms,</t> <t>there is no one like you. <pb/></t>
- 8<t>They are all senseless and foolish;</t> <t>they are taught by worthless wooden idols.</t>
- 9<t>Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish</t> <t>and gold from Uphaz.</t> <t>What the craftsman and goldsmith have made</t> <t>is then dressed in blue and purple—</t> <t>all made by skilled workers.</t>
- 10<t>But the LORD is the true God;</t> <t>he is the living God, the eternal King.</t> <t>When he is angry, the earth trembles;</t> <t>the nations cannot endure his wrath.</t>
- 11<pb/>“Tell them this: ‘These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.’ ”<f>[14]</f>
- 12<pb/><t>But God made the earth by his power;</t> <t>he founded the world by his wisdom</t> <t>and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.</t>
- 13<t>When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar;</t> <t>he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth.</t> <t>He sends lightning with the rain</t> <t>and brings out the wind from his storehouses. <pb/></t>
- 14<t>Everyone is senseless and without knowledge;</t> <t>every goldsmith is shamed by his idols.</t> <t>The images he makes are a fraud;</t> <t>they have no breath in them.</t>
- 15<t>They are worthless, the objects of mockery;</t> <t>when their judgment comes, they will perish.</t>
- 16<t>He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these,</t> <t>for he is the Maker of all things,</t> <t>including Israel, the people of his inheritance—</t> <t>the LORD Almighty is his name.</t>
- 17<t>Gather up your belongings to leave the land,</t> <t>you who live under siege.</t>
- 18<t>For this is what the LORD says:</t> <t>“At this time I will hurl out</t> <t>those who live in this land;</t> <t>I will bring distress on them</t> <t>so that they may be captured.” <pb/></t>
- 19<t>Woe to me because of my injury!</t> <t>My wound is incurable!</t> <t>Yet I said to myself,</t> <t>“This is my sickness, and I must endure it.”</t>
- 20<t>My tent is destroyed;</t> <t>all its ropes are snapped.</t> <t>My children are gone from me and are no more;</t> <t>no one is left now to pitch my tent</t> <t>or to set up my shelter.</t>
- 21<t>The shepherds are senseless</t> <t>and do not inquire of the LORD;</t> <t>so they do not prosper</t> <t>and all their flock is scattered.</t>
- 22<t>Listen! The report is coming—</t> <t>a great commotion from the land of the north!</t> <t>It will make the towns of Judah desolate,</t> <t>a haunt of jackals.</t>
- 23<t>LORD, I know that people’s lives are not their own;</t> <t>it is not for them to direct their steps.</t>
- 24<t>Discipline me, LORD, but only in due measure—</t> <t>not in your anger,</t> <t>or you will reduce me to nothing.</t>
- 25<t>Pour out your wrath on the nations</t> <t>that do not acknowledge you,</t> <t>on the peoples who do not call on your name.</t> <t>For they have devoured Jacob;</t> <t>they have devoured him completely</t> <t>and destroyed his homeland.</t>
