Isaiah 50

  1. 1<pb/>This is what the LORD says: <pb/><t>“Where is your mother’s certificate of divorce</t> <t>with which I sent her away?</t> <t>Or to which of my creditors</t> <t>did I sell you?</t> <t>Because of your sins you were sold;</t> <t>because of your transgressions your mother was sent away.</t>
  2. 2<t>When I came, why was there no one?</t> <t>When I called, why was there no one to answer?</t> <t>Was my arm too short to deliver you?</t> <t>Do I lack the strength to rescue you?</t> <t>By a mere rebuke I dry up the sea,</t> <t>I turn rivers into a desert;</t> <t>their fish rot for lack of water</t> <t>and die of thirst.</t>
  3. 3<t>I clothe the heavens with darkness</t> <t>and make sackcloth its covering.” <pb/></t>
  4. 4<t>The Sovereign LORD has given me a well-instructed tongue,</t> <t>to know the word that sustains the weary.</t> <t>He wakens me morning by morning,</t> <t>wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.</t>
  5. 5<t>The Sovereign LORD has opened my ears;</t> <t>I have not been rebellious,</t> <t>I have not turned away.</t>
  6. 6<t>I offered my back to those who beat me,</t> <t>my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard;</t> <t>I did not hide my face</t> <t>from mocking and spitting.</t>
  7. 7<t>Because the Sovereign LORD helps me,</t> <t>I will not be disgraced.</t> <t>Therefore have I set my face like flint,</t> <t>and I know I will not be put to shame.</t>
  8. 8<t>He who vindicates me is near.</t> <t>Who then will bring charges against me?</t> <t>Let us face each other!</t> <t>Who is my accuser?</t> <t>Let him confront me!</t>
  9. 9<t>It is the Sovereign LORD who helps me.</t> <t>Who will condemn me?</t> <t>They will all wear out like a garment;</t> <t>the moths will eat them up. <pb/></t>
  10. 10<t>Who among you fears the LORD</t> <t>and obeys the word of his servant?</t> <t>Let the one who walks in the dark,</t> <t>who has no light,</t> <t>trust in the name of the LORD</t> <t>and rely on their God.</t>
  11. 11<t>But now, all you who light fires</t> <t>and provide yourselves with flaming torches,</t> <t>go, walk in the light of your fires</t> <t>and of the torches you have set ablaze.</t> <t>This is what you shall receive from my hand:</t> <t>You will lie down in torment.</t>
