Isaiah 43
- 1<pb/><t>But now, this is what the LORD says—</t> <t>he who created you, Jacob,</t> <t>he who formed you, Israel:</t> <t>“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;</t> <t>I have summoned you by name; you are mine.</t>
- 2<t>When you pass through the waters,</t> <t>I will be with you;</t> <t>and when you pass through the rivers,</t> <t>they will not sweep over you.</t> <t>When you walk through the fire,</t> <t>you will not be burned;</t> <t>the flames will not set you ablaze.</t>
- 3<t>For I am the LORD your God,</t> <t>the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;</t> <t>I give Egypt for your ransom,</t> <t>Cush<f>[82]</f> and Seba in your stead.</t>
- 4<t>Since you are precious and honored in my sight,</t> <t>and because I love you,</t> <t>I will give people in exchange for you,</t> <t>nations in exchange for your life.</t>
- 5<t>Do not be afraid, for I am with you;</t> <t>I will bring your children from the east</t> <t>and gather you from the west.</t>
- 6<t>I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’</t> <t>and to the south, ‘Do not hold them back.’</t> <t>Bring my sons from afar</t> <t>and my daughters from the ends of the earth—</t>
- 7<t>everyone who is called by my name,</t> <t>whom I created for my glory,</t> <t>whom I formed and made.” <pb/></t>
- 8<t>Lead out those who have eyes but are blind,</t> <t>who have ears but are deaf.</t>
- 9<t>All the nations gather together</t> <t>and the peoples assemble.</t> <t>Which of their gods foretold this</t> <t>and proclaimed to us the former things?</t> <t>Let them bring in their witnesses to prove they were right,</t> <t>so that others may hear and say, “It is true.”</t>
- 10<t>“You are my witnesses,” declares the LORD,</t> <t>“and my servant whom I have chosen,</t> <t>so that you may know and believe me</t> <t>and understand that I am he.</t> <t>Before me no god was formed,</t> <t>nor will there be one after me.</t>
- 11<t>I, even I, am the LORD,</t> <t>and apart from me there is no savior.</t>
- 12<t>I have revealed and saved and proclaimed—</t> <t>I, and not some foreign god among you.</t> <t>You are my witnesses,” declares the LORD, “that I am God.</t>
- 13<t>Yes, and from ancient days I am he.</t> <t>No one can deliver out of my hand.</t> <t>When I act, who can reverse it?”</t>
- 14<t>This is what the LORD says—</t> <t>your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:</t> <t>“For your sake I will send to Babylon</t> <t>and bring down as fugitives all the Babylonians,<f>[83]</f></t> <t>in the ships in which they took pride.</t>
- 15<t>I am the LORD, your Holy One,</t> <t>Israel’s Creator, your King.” <pb/></t>
- 16<t>This is what the LORD says—</t> <t>he who made a way through the sea,</t> <t>a path through the mighty waters,</t>
- 17<t>who drew out the chariots and horses,</t> <t>the army and reinforcements together,</t> <t>and they lay there, never to rise again,</t> <t>extinguished, snuffed out like a wick:</t>
- 18<t>“Forget the former things;</t> <t>do not dwell on the past.</t>
- 19<t>See, I am doing a new thing!</t> <t>Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?</t> <t>I am making a way in the wilderness</t> <t>and streams in the wasteland.</t>
- 20<t>The wild animals honor me,</t> <t>the jackals and the owls,</t> <t>because I provide water in the wilderness</t> <t>and streams in the wasteland,</t> <t>to give drink to my people, my chosen,</t>
- 21<t>the people I formed for myself</t> <t>that they may proclaim my praise. <pb/></t>
- 22<t>“Yet you have not called on me, Jacob,</t> <t>you have not wearied yourselves for<f>[84]</f> me, Israel.</t>
- 23<t>You have not brought me sheep for burnt offerings,</t> <t>nor honored me with your sacrifices.</t> <t>I have not burdened you with grain offerings</t> <t>nor wearied you with demands for incense.</t>
- 24<t>You have not bought any fragrant calamus for me,</t> <t>or lavished on me the fat of your sacrifices.</t> <t>But you have burdened me with your sins</t> <t>and wearied me with your offenses. <pb/></t>
- 25<t>“I, even I, am he who blots out</t> <t>your transgressions, for my own sake,</t> <t>and remembers your sins no more.</t>
- 26<t>Review the past for me,</t> <t>let us argue the matter together;</t> <t>state the case for your innocence.</t>
- 27<t>Your first father sinned;</t> <t>those I sent to teach you rebelled against me.</t>
- 28<t>So I disgraced the dignitaries of your temple;</t> <t>I consigned Jacob to destruction<f>[85]</f></t> <t>and Israel to scorn.</t>
