Isaiah 21
- 1<pb/>A prophecy against the Desert by the Sea: <pb/><t>Like whirlwinds sweeping through the southland,</t> <t>an invader comes from the desert,</t> <t>from a land of terror. <pb/></t>
- 2<t>A dire vision has been shown to me:</t> <t>The traitor betrays, the looter takes loot.</t> <t>Elam, attack! Media, lay siege!</t> <t>I will bring to an end all the groaning she caused. <pb/></t>
- 3<t>At this my body is racked with pain,</t> <t>pangs seize me, like those of a woman in labor;</t> <t>I am staggered by what I hear,</t> <t>I am bewildered by what I see.</t>
- 4<t>My heart falters,</t> <t>fear makes me tremble;</t> <t>the twilight I longed for</t> <t>has become a horror to me. <pb/></t>
- 5<t>They set the tables,</t> <t>they spread the rugs,</t> <t>they eat, they drink!</t> <t>Get up, you officers,</t> <t>oil the shields!</t>
- 6<pb/>This is what the Lord says to me: <pb/><t>“Go, post a lookout</t> <t>and have him report what he sees.</t>
- 7<t>When he sees chariots</t> <t>with teams of horses,</t> <t>riders on donkeys</t> <t>or riders on camels,</t> <t>let him be alert,</t> <t>fully alert.”</t>
- 8<pb/>And the lookout<f>[48]</f> shouted, <pb/><t>“Day after day, my lord, I stand on the watchtower;</t> <t>every night I stay at my post.</t>
- 9<t>Look, here comes a man in a chariot</t> <t>with a team of horses.</t> <t>And he gives back the answer:</t> <t>‘Babylon has fallen, has fallen!</t> <t>All the images of its gods</t> <t>lie shattered on the ground!’ ” <pb/></t>
- 10<t>My people who are crushed on the threshing floor,</t> <t>I tell you what I have heard</t> <t>from the LORD Almighty,</t> <t>from the God of Israel.</t>
- 11<pb/>A prophecy against Dumah<f>[49]</f>: <pb/><t>Someone calls to me from Seir,</t> <t>“Watchman, what is left of the night?</t> <t>Watchman, what is left of the night?”</t>
- 12<t>The watchman replies,</t> <t>“Morning is coming, but also the night.</t> <t>If you would ask, then ask;</t> <t>and come back yet again.”</t>
- 13<pb/>A prophecy against Arabia: <pb/><t>You caravans of Dedanites,</t> <t>who camp in the thickets of Arabia,</t>
- 14<t>bring water for the thirsty;</t> <t>you who live in Tema,</t> <t>bring food for the fugitives.</t>
- 15<t>They flee from the sword,</t> <t>from the drawn sword,</t> <t>from the bent bow</t> <t>and from the heat of battle.</t>
- 16<pb/>This is what the Lord says to me: “Within one year, as a servant bound by contract would count it, all the splendor of Kedar will come to an end.
- 17The survivors of the archers, the warriors of Kedar, will be few.” The LORD, the God of Israel, has spoken.
