Isaiah 13

  1. 1<pb/>A prophecy against Babylon that Isaiah son of Amoz saw:
  2. 2<pb/><t>Raise a banner on a bare hilltop,</t> <t>shout to them;</t> <t>beckon to them</t> <t>to enter the gates of the nobles.</t>
  3. 3<t>I have commanded those I prepared for battle;</t> <t>I have summoned my warriors to carry out my wrath—</t> <t>those who rejoice in my triumph. <pb/></t>
  4. 4<t>Listen, a noise on the mountains,</t> <t>like that of a great multitude!</t> <t>Listen, an uproar among the kingdoms,</t> <t>like nations massing together!</t> <t>The LORD Almighty is mustering</t> <t>an army for war.</t>
  5. 5<t>They come from faraway lands,</t> <t>from the ends of the heavens—</t> <t>the LORD and the weapons of his wrath—</t> <t>to destroy the whole country. <pb/></t>
  6. 6<t>Wail, for the day of the LORD is near;</t> <t>it will come like destruction from the Almighty.<f>[34]</f></t>
  7. 7<t>Because of this, all hands will go limp,</t> <t>every heart will melt with fear.</t>
  8. 8<t>Terror will seize them,</t> <t>pain and anguish will grip them;</t> <t>they will writhe like a woman in labor.</t> <t>They will look aghast at each other,</t> <t>their faces aflame. <pb/></t>
  9. 9<t>See, the day of the LORD is coming</t> <t>—a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger—</t> <t>to make the land desolate</t> <t>and destroy the sinners within it.</t>
  10. 10<t>The stars of heaven and their constellations</t> <t>will not show their light.</t> <t>The rising sun will be darkened</t> <t>and the moon will not give its light.</t>
  11. 11<t>I will punish the world for its evil,</t> <t>the wicked for their sins.</t> <t>I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty</t> <t>and will humble the pride of the ruthless.</t>
  12. 12<t>I will make people scarcer than pure gold,</t> <t>more rare than the gold of Ophir.</t>
  13. 13<t>Therefore I will make the heavens tremble;</t> <t>and the earth will shake from its place</t> <t>at the wrath of the LORD Almighty,</t> <t>in the day of his burning anger. <pb/></t>
  14. 14<t>Like a hunted gazelle,</t> <t>like sheep without a shepherd,</t> <t>they will all return to their own people,</t> <t>they will flee to their native land.</t>
  15. 15<t>Whoever is captured will be thrust through;</t> <t>all who are caught will fall by the sword.</t>
  16. 16<t>Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes;</t> <t>their houses will be looted and their wives violated. <pb/></t>
  17. 17<t>See, I will stir up against them the Medes,</t> <t>who do not care for silver</t> <t>and have no delight in gold.</t>
  18. 18<t>Their bows will strike down the young men;</t> <t>they will have no mercy on infants,</t> <t>nor will they look with compassion on children.</t>
  19. 19<t>Babylon, the jewel of kingdoms,</t> <t>the pride and glory of the Babylonians,<f>[35]</f></t> <t>will be overthrown by God</t> <t>like Sodom and Gomorrah.</t>
  20. 20<t>She will never be inhabited</t> <t>or lived in through all generations;</t> <t>there no nomads will pitch their tents,</t> <t>there no shepherds will rest their flocks.</t>
  21. 21<t>But desert creatures will lie there,</t> <t>jackals will fill her houses;</t> <t>there the owls will dwell,</t> <t>and there the wild goats will leap about.</t>
  22. 22<t>Hyenas will inhabit her strongholds,</t> <t>jackals her luxurious palaces.</t> <t>Her time is at hand,</t> <t>and her days will not be prolonged.</t>
