Genesis 49
- 1<pb/>Then Jacob called for his sons and said: “Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in days to come.
- 2<pb/><t>“Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob;</t> <t>listen to your father Israel. <pb/></t>
- 3<t>“Reuben, you are my firstborn,</t> <t>my might, the first sign of my strength,</t> <t>excelling in honor, excelling in power.</t>
- 4<t>Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel,</t> <t>for you went up onto your father’s bed,</t> <t>onto my couch and defiled it. <pb/></t>
- 5<t>“Simeon and Levi are brothers—</t> <t>their swords<f>[208]</f> are weapons of violence.</t>
- 6<t>Let me not enter their council,</t> <t>let me not join their assembly,</t> <t>for they have killed men in their anger</t> <t>and hamstrung oxen as they pleased.</t>
- 7<t>Cursed be their anger, so fierce,</t> <t>and their fury, so cruel!</t> <t>I will scatter them in Jacob</t> <t>and disperse them in Israel. <pb/></t>
- 8<t>“Judah,<f>[209]</f> your brothers will praise you;</t> <t>your hand will be on the neck of your enemies;</t> <t>your father’s sons will bow down to you.</t>
- 9<t>You are a lion’s cub, Judah;</t> <t>you return from the prey, my son.</t> <t>Like a lion he crouches and lies down,</t> <t>like a lioness—who dares to rouse him?</t>
- 10<t>The scepter will not depart from Judah,</t> <t>nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,<f>[210]</f></t> <t>until he to whom it belongs<f>[211]</f> shall come</t> <t>and the obedience of the nations shall be his.</t>
- 11<t>He will tether his donkey to a vine,</t> <t>his colt to the choicest branch;</t> <t>he will wash his garments in wine,</t> <t>his robes in the blood of grapes.</t>
- 12<t>His eyes will be darker than wine,</t> <t>his teeth whiter than milk.<f>[212]</f> <pb/></t>
- 13<t>“Zebulun will live by the seashore</t> <t>and become a haven for ships;</t> <t>his border will extend toward Sidon. <pb/></t>
- 14<t>“Issachar is a rawboned<f>[213]</f> donkey</t> <t>lying down among the sheep pens.<f>[214]</f></t>
- 15<t>When he sees how good is his resting place</t> <t>and how pleasant is his land,</t> <t>he will bend his shoulder to the burden</t> <t>and submit to forced labor. <pb/></t>
- 16<t>“Dan<f>[215]</f> will provide justice for his people</t> <t>as one of the tribes of Israel.</t>
- 17<t>Dan will be a snake by the roadside,</t> <t>a viper along the path,</t> <t>that bites the horse’s heels</t> <t>so that its rider tumbles backward. <pb/></t>
- 18<t>“I look for your deliverance, LORD. <pb/></t>
- 19<t>“Gad<f>[216]</f> will be attacked by a band of raiders,</t> <t>but he will attack them at their heels. <pb/></t>
- 20<t>“Asher’s food will be rich;</t> <t>he will provide delicacies fit for a king. <pb/></t>
- 21<t>“Naphtali is a doe set free</t> <t>that bears beautiful fawns.<f>[217]</f> <pb/></t>
- 22<t>“Joseph is a fruitful vine,</t> <t>a fruitful vine near a spring,</t> <t>whose branches climb over a wall.<f>[218]</f></t>
- 23<t>With bitterness archers attacked him;</t> <t>they shot at him with hostility.</t>
- 24<t>But his bow remained steady,</t> <t>his strong arms stayed<f>[219]</f> limber,</t> <t>because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob,</t> <t>because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,</t>
- 25<t>because of your father’s God, who helps you,</t> <t>because of the Almighty,<f>[220]</f> who blesses you</t> <t>with blessings of the skies above,</t> <t>blessings of the deep springs below,</t> <t>blessings of the breast and womb.</t>
- 26<t>Your father’s blessings are greater</t> <t>than the blessings of the ancient mountains,</t> <t>than<f>[221]</f> the bounty of the age-old hills.</t> <t>Let all these rest on the head of Joseph,</t> <t>on the brow of the prince among<f>[222]</f> his brothers. <pb/></t>
- 27<t>“Benjamin is a ravenous wolf;</t> <t>in the morning he devours the prey,</t> <t>in the evening he divides the plunder.”</t>
- 28<pb/>All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them, giving each the blessing appropriate to him.
- 29<pb/>Then he gave them these instructions: “I am about to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite,
- 30the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre in Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite.
- 31There Abraham and his wife Sarah were buried, there Isaac and his wife Rebekah were buried, and there I buried Leah.
- 32The field and the cave in it were bought from the Hittites.<f>[223]</f>”
- 33<pb/>When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people.
