Ecclesiastes 4
- 1<pb/>Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun: <pb/><t>I saw the tears of the oppressed—</t> <t>and they have no comforter;</t> <t>power was on the side of their oppressors—</t> <t>and they have no comforter.</t>
- 2<t>And I declared that the dead,</t> <t>who had already died,</t> <t>are happier than the living,</t> <t>who are still alive.</t>
- 3<t>But better than both</t> <t>is the one who has never been born,</t> <t>who has not seen the evil</t> <t>that is done under the sun.</t>
- 4<pb/>And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
- 5<pb/><t>Fools fold their hands</t> <t>and ruin themselves.</t>
- 6<t>Better one handful with tranquillity</t> <t>than two handfuls with toil</t> <t>and chasing after the wind.</t>
- 7<pb/>Again I saw something meaningless under the sun:
- 8<pb/><t>There was a man all alone;</t> <t>he had neither son nor brother.</t> <t>There was no end to his toil,</t> <t>yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.</t> <t>“For whom am I toiling,” he asked,</t> <t>“and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”</t> <t>This too is meaningless—</t> <t>a miserable business! <pb/></t>
- 9<t>Two are better than one,</t> <t>because they have a good return for their labor:</t>
- 10<t>If either of them falls down,</t> <t>one can help the other up.</t> <t>But pity anyone who falls</t> <t>and has no one to help them up.</t>
- 11<t>Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.</t> <t>But how can one keep warm alone?</t>
- 12<t>Though one may be overpowered,</t> <t>two can defend themselves.</t> <t>A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.</t>
- 13<pb/>Better a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to heed a warning.
- 14The youth may have come from prison to the kingship, or he may have been born in poverty within his kingdom.
- 15I saw that all who lived and walked under the sun followed the youth, the king’s successor.
- 16There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
