2 Samuel 22
- 1<pb/>David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
- 2He said: <pb/><t>“The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;</t>
- 3<t>my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,</t> <t>my shield<f>[67]</f> and the horn<f>[68]</f> of my salvation.</t> <t>He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior—</t> <t>from violent people you save me. <pb/></t>
- 4<t>“I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise,</t> <t>and have been saved from my enemies.</t>
- 5<t>The waves of death swirled about me;</t> <t>the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.</t>
- 6<t>The cords of the grave coiled around me;</t> <t>the snares of death confronted me. <pb/></t>
- 7<t>“In my distress I called to the LORD;</t> <t>I called out to my God.</t> <t>From his temple he heard my voice;</t> <t>my cry came to his ears.</t>
- 8<t>The earth trembled and quaked,</t> <t>the foundations of the heavens<f>[69]</f> shook;</t> <t>they trembled because he was angry.</t>
- 9<t>Smoke rose from his nostrils;</t> <t>consuming fire came from his mouth,</t> <t>burning coals blazed out of it.</t>
- 10<t>He parted the heavens and came down;</t> <t>dark clouds were under his feet.</t>
- 11<t>He mounted the cherubim and flew;</t> <t>he soared<f>[70]</f> on the wings of the wind.</t>
- 12<t>He made darkness his canopy around him—</t> <t>the dark<f>[71]</f> rain clouds of the sky.</t>
- 13<t>Out of the brightness of his presence</t> <t>bolts of lightning blazed forth.</t>
- 14<t>The LORD thundered from heaven;</t> <t>the voice of the Most High resounded.</t>
- 15<t>He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy,</t> <t>with great bolts of lightning he routed them.</t>
- 16<t>The valleys of the sea were exposed</t> <t>and the foundations of the earth laid bare</t> <t>at the rebuke of the LORD,</t> <t>at the blast of breath from his nostrils. <pb/></t>
- 17<t>“He reached down from on high and took hold of me;</t> <t>he drew me out of deep waters.</t>
- 18<t>He rescued me from my powerful enemy,</t> <t>from my foes, who were too strong for me.</t>
- 19<t>They confronted me in the day of my disaster,</t> <t>but the LORD was my support.</t>
- 20<t>He brought me out into a spacious place;</t> <t>he rescued me because he delighted in me. <pb/></t>
- 21<t>“The LORD has dealt with me according to my righteousness;</t> <t>according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.</t>
- 22<t>For I have kept the ways of the LORD;</t> <t>I am not guilty of turning from my God.</t>
- 23<t>All his laws are before me;</t> <t>I have not turned away from his decrees.</t>
- 24<t>I have been blameless before him</t> <t>and have kept myself from sin.</t>
- 25<t>The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness,</t> <t>according to my cleanness<f>[72]</f> in his sight. <pb/></t>
- 26<t>“To the faithful you show yourself faithful,</t> <t>to the blameless you show yourself blameless,</t>
- 27<t>to the pure you show yourself pure,</t> <t>but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.</t>
- 28<t>You save the humble,</t> <t>but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them low.</t>
- 29<t>You, LORD, are my lamp;</t> <t>the LORD turns my darkness into light.</t>
- 30<t>With your help I can advance against a troop<f>[73]</f>;</t> <t>with my God I can scale a wall. <pb/></t>
- 31<t>“As for God, his way is perfect:</t> <t>The LORD’s word is flawless;</t> <t>he shields all who take refuge in him.</t>
- 32<t>For who is God besides the LORD?</t> <t>And who is the Rock except our God?</t>
- 33<t>It is God who arms me with strength<f>[74]</f></t> <t>and keeps my way secure.</t>
- 34<t>He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;</t> <t>he causes me to stand on the heights.</t>
- 35<t>He trains my hands for battle;</t> <t>my arms can bend a bow of bronze.</t>
- 36<t>You make your saving help my shield;</t> <t>your help has made<f>[75]</f> me great.</t>
- 37<t>You provide a broad path for my feet,</t> <t>so that my ankles do not give way. <pb/></t>
- 38<t>“I pursued my enemies and crushed them;</t> <t>I did not turn back till they were destroyed.</t>
- 39<t>I crushed them completely, and they could not rise;</t> <t>they fell beneath my feet.</t>
- 40<t>You armed me with strength for battle;</t> <t>you humbled my adversaries before me.</t>
- 41<t>You made my enemies turn their backs in flight,</t> <t>and I destroyed my foes.</t>
- 42<t>They cried for help, but there was no one to save them—</t> <t>to the LORD, but he did not answer.</t>
- 43<t>I beat them as fine as the dust of the earth;</t> <t>I pounded and trampled them like mud in the streets. <pb/></t>
- 44<t>“You have delivered me from the attacks of the peoples;</t> <t>you have preserved me as the head of nations.</t> <t>People I did not know now serve me,</t>
- 45<t>foreigners cower before me;</t> <t>as soon as they hear of me, they obey me.</t>
- 46<t>They all lose heart;</t> <t>they come trembling<f>[76]</f> from their strongholds. <pb/></t>
- 47<t>“The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock!</t> <t>Exalted be my God, the Rock, my Savior!</t>
- 48<t>He is the God who avenges me,</t> <t>who puts the nations under me,</t>
- 49<t>who sets me free from my enemies.</t> <t>You exalted me above my foes;</t> <t>from a violent man you rescued me.</t>
- 50<t>Therefore I will praise you, LORD, among the nations;</t> <t>I will sing the praises of your name. <pb/></t>
- 51<t>“He gives his king great victories;</t> <t>he shows unfailing kindness to his anointed,</t> <t>to David and his descendants forever.”</t>
